The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has opened a strategic conversation with the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL), signaling the start of a robust collaboration aimed at building people-centered justice systems in Nigeria.

The President of the NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, hosted a high-level delegation from HiiL, led by its visiting CEO, Mr. Udo Jude Ilo, at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Describing the meeting as “more than a courtesy visit,” Osigwe noted it was a convergence of shared ideas, insights, and purpose. “We had a robust discussion about the urgent need to reform our justice system to make it more accessible, responsive, and truly people-centered,” he stated.

Mr. Ilo, in his presentation, highlighted key findings from HiiL’s Justice Needs survey, which revealed that many of the disputes currently burdening Nigerian courts could be more efficiently resolved through alternative justice mechanisms. The data, he emphasized, presents both a challenge and an opportunity to reimagine how justice is delivered across the country.

“Our courts are overwhelmed with cases that could be better resolved through community mediation, legal aid, and other innovative interventions,” Ilo noted. “HiiL is committed to partnering with institutions like the NBA to drive scalable reforms that are both impactful and sustainable.”

Responding to the insights shared, Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s commitment to identifying its role and fulfilling it with conviction. “We may not be able to fix every problem at once, but we must take steps that matter. This partnership with HiiL represents a meaningful stride toward justice sector innovation that is practical, inclusive, and transformative.”

The NBA President also used the occasion to formally congratulate Ilo on his emergence as CEO of HiiL, describing it as a well-deserved appointment that would further advance people-centered justice across Africa and beyond.

As part of the collaboration, both organizations plan to explore joint programs, policy dialogues, and advocacy initiatives—including engagements at the upcoming NBA Annual General Conference.

“At the NBA,” Osigwe affirmed, “our commitment remains strong: justice must not only be done, it must be felt—by everyone, everywhere.”
