NBA Garki Branch Urges Police To Investigate Threats Against TheNigeriaLawyer Founder

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch, also known as Liberty Bar, has written a formal letter to the Commissioner of Police at the F.C.T Police Command, Abuja, seeking an investigation into the threats to the life of Chioma Unini K., the founder and publisher of TheNNigeriaLawyer, a prominent law-related news blog.

In a petition dated 8th of June, 2023 and addressed to the FCT Police Commissioner, the NBA Garki Branch expressed concern over the constant threat to Chioma Unini’s life, intimidation tactics, and attempts to silence her.

Recall Chioma Unini has faced anonymous threats following the publication of articles criticizing certain governmental institutions and individuals’ role in the 2023 elections. Specifically, the articles highlighted the targeted suppression and subjugation of Igbos by non-state parties, allegedly with tacit support from state institutions that failed to take action despite undeniable evidence.

According to the petition to the Police, the initial wave of threats, originating from encrypted phone numbers, occurred after the publication on March 23, titled “Did MC Oluomo’s Threat To Igbo Voters In Lagos End Up As ‘A Joke’? A Query To The Nigeria Police Force.” This publication addressed the police’s refusal to apprehend and investigate leaders of the ruling party who allegedly incited ethnic hatred during the elections. The anonymous callers warned Chioma Unini against publishing similar articles, cautioning her about the potential consequences.

In a subsequent editorial published on May 13, titled “Re: ‘Ese Ndigbo Terrorism Trial Begins In July’: A Case of Selective Justice By The Lagos AG And Police Against Igbos,” TheNigeriaLawyer questioned the selective prosecution of Mr. Nwajagu for inciting comments while highlighting the apparent impunity enjoyed by MC Oluomo. The editorial stressed the importance of not only doing justice but ensuring that justice is manifestly and absolutely seen to be done.

These publications further provoked the anonymous individuals, leading to increased threats against Chioma Unini’s life and safety.

The NBA Garki Branch, through its chairman, Obioma Ezenwobodo, Esq., has expressed its keen interest in the outcome of the police investigation and has committed to following up on the progress. They have provided their contact information for further correspondence and collaboration.

As those behind the threats against Chioma Unini remain unravelled, legal professionals and concerned citizens are eagerly awaiting the police investigation to identify the perpetrators behind the threats and take appropriate legal actions against them.
