*Cites Assurances From State Authorities On Safety

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has assured that Kano State is safe and ready to host the upcoming NBA Section on Legal Practice (SLP) conference, despite the recent tensions surrounding the traditional position of the Emir of Kano.

In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, the NBA acknowledged the situation in Kano but emphasized that the association has received assurances from the Kano State Government and relevant law enforcement agencies regarding the safety and security of the conference.

The NBA President, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, urged all intending conferees to continue with their plans to attend the conference, which promises to be impactful and engaging.

“The NBA wishes to state unequivocally that Kano is safe and ready to host the NBA Section on Legal Practice (SLP) conference,” the statement read. “This was further confirmed by the Chairmen of Kano, Ungoggo and Dutse Branches of the NBA, several members of these Branches, and Mr Aminu Sani Gadanya, mni, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the NBA-SLP Conference.”

The NBA’s decision to proceed with the conference in Kano comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding the traditional leadership of the ancient city. The NNPP-controlled Kano House of Assembly recently repealed the Kano Emirates Council law, leading to the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, replacing Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

This move has sparked a power struggle between the state and federal authorities, with the federal government recognizing Bayero as the legitimate Emir, while the state government backs Sanusi’s reinstatement.

Despite these tensions, the NBA has expressed confidence in the ability of the Kano State Government and law enforcement agencies to maintain security and ensure the successful hosting of the conference.

The NBA-SLP conference, scheduled to take place from June 2 to 5, is expected to attract legal practitioners from across the country to discuss the theme “Administration of Justice in Nigeria: Challenges and Reforms.”

The association’s decision to proceed with the conference in Kano demonstrates its commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting legal discourse, even in the face of ongoing challenges.
