The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abuja Branch has reacted to the letter of the National President, Paul Usoro, SAN dissolving the Electoral Committee of the Branch.

In a letter made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), the Branch Chairman, Folarin Aluko, expressed surprise because according to him, Mr. Usoro (SAN) promised to resolve the matter amicably, not a dissolution.

TNL recalls that NBA President, Paul Usoro, SAN has dissolved the two factions in NBA Abuja Branch. The President also constituted Abuja Branch National Electoral Committee that will conduct an election for the two factions.

He also dissolved the separate electoral committees earlier set up by the two factions of the NBA Abuja Branch.

The letter dated 18th day of May, 2020 states as follows:

“Mr. President,

RE: NBA ABUJA BRANCH 202 UNIFIED ELECTIONS

The above subject matter and your open letter dated 18th May, 2020 hereby refer.

I was surprised to read the contents of your letter referenced above.

Mr. President, the outcome of our phone conversation of Friday, 15th May, 2020 was to initiate consultations and not to dissolve an Electoral Committee set up by the Branch. Till date, this was my first ad only conversation about this with your good self.

Learned Silk, it is instructive to note that the NBA Abuja issue emanated from a failure to obey the rule of law. The issue was worsened by the undue interference by the immediate past administration. It was on this premise that I wrote to you on the 26th of August, 2018 and on other occasions, requesting your kind and urgent intervention in the Abuja issue, which were all ignored.

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding” and while I do not doubt your bona fides, putting the cart before the horse will only intensify the inferno that we seek to extinguish.

Learning from the mistakes of the past, it is clear that the fundamental concerns of the constitutionality and legitimacy of the committee coupled with the lopsided attitude of the Secretariat over the past 2 years will undermine any true and lasting resolution.

The members of my Executive committee and I are always willing to meet with a peace and Reconciliation Committees, as the first step, to discuss a pathway to amity, even if it means achieving a Two-Branch solution. This is especially with regards to the continued disobedience of court Orders by some members of the Branch.”

Thank you for your indulgence, please accept the assurance of my highest regards.
