The School of Alternative Dispute Resolution (SADR), in collaboration with SCMA UK, has announced the opening of registration for its maiden training programme in Appellate Mediation Advocacy, scheduled to hold on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

The virtual training, which will take place via Zoom at 4:00pm, is designed to equip legal practitioners with specialized skills in navigating the unique challenges of mediation at the appellate level.

The training comes against the backdrop of the Court of Appeal (ADR) Rules 2021, which established the Court of Appeal Alternative Dispute Resolution Programme (CAADRC) to be operated by the Court at the direction of its President.

According to the organizers, irrespective of the procedural format, all Court of Appeal mediation programmes require parties to enter into a managed negotiation where they are confronted by the power imbalance of one party having the benefit of a first instance decision which is now under challenge.

This unique dynamic requires a special skill set to achieve a win-win outcome, making specialized training in appellate mediation advocacy essential for legal practitioners.

The training programme will cover two critical areas:

  1. Guiding Principles of Appellate Advocacy – Participants will learn the foundational principles that govern effective advocacy at the appellate mediation level, including strategies for managing power imbalances and navigating the complexities of challenging first instance decisions.
  2. Psychology of Mediation at an Appellate Level – The training will delve into the psychological dynamics at play when parties engage in mediation after one party has already secured a favorable judgment, and how advocates can effectively manage these dynamics to achieve successful outcomes.

The School of Alternative Dispute Resolution (SADR) is a Government Accredited Management Training Institution that specializes in providing high-quality training in various aspects of alternative dispute resolution.

For this maiden programme in Appellate Mediation Advocacy, SADR is collaborating with SCMA UK to bring international best practices and expertise to Nigerian legal practitioners.

With the increasing adoption of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms by Nigerian courts, including the Court of Appeal, legal practitioners need to develop specialized skills in appellate mediation advocacy to effectively represent their clients.

The power dynamics inherent in appellate mediation—where one party has already secured a favorable first instance decision—require advocates to employ sophisticated negotiation and mediation strategies that differ significantly from traditional appellate litigation.

This training provides practitioners with the tools and insights needed to navigate these complex situations and achieve optimal outcomes for their clients.

Legal practitioners interested in enhancing their skills in appellate mediation advocacy are encouraged to register early for this maiden training programme.
