Every mother, woman and indeed every rational being should be worried and concerned over the rising cases of rape in Nigeria. More worrisome is the new method of raping and killing the victims. This is the height of wickedness.

Nigeria has always been a decent place as far as rape is concerned. I seldom hear of rape cases in Nigeria prior to 2019. In the University I graduated from (university of Maiduguri) through out my five years, there was not even a single case of rape, yet female students leave their hostel even by 1:00am to go for their studies.

The truth is that rape was not common in Nigeria because Nigerians are proud people. Rape is associated with people of low esteem, people who have no confidence in themselves, cowards who cannot face a woman one on one and convince her to date him. These are the people that resort to this shameful act.

No man worth his onions will ever do this dastardly act that is now gaining notoriety in our dear country. I think parental up bringing of our children these days especially the males is suspicious.

It is therefore not surprising that the Cross River State Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers ( FIDA) held a city protest walk in Calabar against the rising cases of rape and all gender based violence against women.

I am suggesting in strong terms that since the punishment in our laws for rape to deter people from the said offence seems to have lost its value, we should introduce a new method of castration.

This will make parents wake up to their responsibilities of training and raising their children in the right direction and of course make the evildoers to think twice before doing anything stupid. We must put an end to this dastardly act by all means.

I therefore call on the National Assembly to revisit the issue of castration even though it was rejected last week.
