Residents of Malabo in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State have raised the alarm over a mysterious ailment that is affecting body parts and causing severe pain among victims in the community.
Alhaji Aliyu Hammawa, the District Head of Malabo, revealed that at least 30 people have been affected so far. Eight victims are currently receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, while others are being treated at local community health facilities. He commended the state government for its prompt response and called for urgent investigation and diagnosis.
According to patients, the illness often begins as a boil, which later bursts and gradually destroys the flesh, sometimes affecting the bones in the affected area.
Mrs. Phibi Sabo, who has been battling the ailment for weeks, described her ordeal:
“It started like a boil with pains, later got swollen and burst, then began to eat up the flesh on my leg, damaging the bones and causing serious pain. This has left me with an open wound. I can’t explain what is happening to me, though I have visited the hospital and received medication,” Sabo said.
She appealed for government assistance, stressing that many victims can no longer carry out daily activities or support their families.
Another victim, Malam Junaidu Adamu, recounted a similar experience:
“About two months ago, after returning from the farm, I felt pains in my leg. It started like a boil, then burst and spread until my flesh started decaying. I spend about N25,000 weekly on medications, but the more I take, the worse the condition gets. Now my wife stays home to care for me and the children, which has affected our livelihood,” he said, urging the government to act before the disease spreads further.
Confirming the outbreak, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, said the agency, in collaboration with the local government, had engaged 28 victims, though only eight agreed to medical treatment.
“The state government has already covered their treatment at MAUTH, and samples have been taken for histology tests. Results are expected within the next 10 days. We encourage victims to seek medical care rather than rely on traditional remedies,” Bashir said.
He further urged residents to report any unusual health conditions in their communities promptly to health facilities for proper diagnosis and referral.
