The burden of formulating a pragmatic framework and blue print on the issue of welfare lies squarely on these 11 man Committee headed by the 2ND Vice President of NBA, Mr M.O. Ubani popularly known as MOU. The Secretary of the Committee is Mr Adegbite Adesina who is currently the Welfare Officer of the national body. Incidentally, the two key officers in the Committee were once Chairman and Secretary respectively of NBA Ikeja between 2012 and 2014 during which the branch experienced supersonic performance in all spheres in terms of administration of the branch. The burden of the welfare of over hundred thousand lawyers now lies squarely on the shoulder of this committee. They mandate of the committee includes formulation of a blue print/strategy on the welfare of lawyers; to draw up an action plan for the implementation of NBA Welfare blue print, to effectively look into matters which include designing a nationwide insurance scheme which is already in place and fine tune it to meet the current expectations of legal practitioners. Other mandates of the committee includes formulation of a sound, pragmatic welfare package for young lawyers that will accommodate matters of pupilage, remuneration, work ethics, and integration into the legal profession and encourage specialization into the various areas of practice; to effect where necessary, the establishment of the Lawyers’ Cooperative Societies at the branch levels of the NBA to help members overcome some financial burdens and to implement the pension scheme and insurance scheme policies as laid down by the Welfare Trust Foundation etc. The Committee is expected to prepare and formulate a pragmatic welfare package that will be approved by the National Executive Committee and perhaps the agitations of lawyers especially the young lawyers will cease when they begin to see practical steps taken to address some of their welfare issues. The Constituency awaits Ubani and his team which has only one year to deliver on the committee’s mandate on how they will begin to act in the overall interest of the lawyers in Nigeria.]]>
