The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has denied claims that some members of its National Executive Council, NEC, were excluded from receiving notices for the NEC meeting scheduled to hold in Awka, Anambra State.

The clarification was made by the NBA General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, FNIM, FCIArb, in a statement dated May 6, 2026, titled “NEC Notices Were Issued To All Members.”

The statement was issued in response to a publication by Egbe Amofin Oodua, which had called for the suspension of the NBA NEC meeting in Awka over alleged exclusion of dissenting voices and procedural irregularities in the issuance of notices.

Egbe Amofin Oodua had alleged that some NEC members initially received notices in compliance with the 21-day requirement, but that the notices were later withdrawn, particularly in respect of members perceived to hold dissenting or critical views about the forthcoming NBA elections.

The group further alleged that fresh notices were later issued less than 24 hours to the scheduled meeting, thereby undermining the ability of affected members to make logistical arrangements.

However, the NBA General Secretary dismissed the allegations, stating that notices of the NEC meeting were duly issued and sent to the official email addresses of all NEC members on record from the Office of the General Secretary.

According to the statement, the notices were issued in line with established practice and the provisions of the NBA Constitution.

“For the avoidance of doubt, notices of the NEC Meeting were duly issued and sent to the official email addresses of all members of NEC on record from the Office of the General Secretary, in line with established practice and the provisions of the NBA Constitution,” the statement read.

The NBA also explained that the date and venue of the Awka NEC meeting were not newly fixed, but had been agreed upon at the last NEC meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on February 5, 2026.

It said the Maiduguri meeting was formally adjourned to Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Awka, Anambra State.

“Importantly, the date and venue for this NEC Meeting were fixed at the last NEC Meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on 5th February 2026, where the meeting was formally adjourned to Thursday, 7th May 2026, in Awka, Anambra State,” the statement added.

The Association described as misleading the suggestion that any category of NEC members was excluded from receiving notices on account of perceived dissenting views.

It added that after the notices were issued, several NEC members confirmed their attendance through the office of the Welfare Secretary, Mr. Auta Nyada, in preparation for the meeting.

“It is therefore misleading to suggest that any category of members was excluded from receiving notices of the meeting on account of perceived dissenting views,” the statement said.

The NBA maintained that the present leadership remains committed to constitutionalism, inclusiveness, due process and the unity of the Bar.

It insisted that no NEC member had been or would be excluded from participating in the meeting.

“The NBA under the present leadership remains firmly committed to constitutionalism, inclusiveness, due process, and the unity of the Bar. Accordingly, the NBA has not and will not exclude any member of NEC from participating in NEC,” the statement read.

AWKA NEC NOTICES PRESS RELEASE 6 5 26

The Association therefore advised members to disregard the publication calling for the suspension of the NEC meeting.

It stated that the NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2026, remains validly convened and will proceed as planned.
