Commemorating International Human Rights Day 2023, renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mazi Afam Osigwe accentuated freedom, equality and justice as the defining aspirations of the annual milestone.

In a thought piece tied to the theme “Dignity, Freedom and Justice For All”, Osigwe positioned basic liberties, non-discrimination and accountability as the building blocks of a compassionate world.

However, the legal luminary highlighted the harsh reality that these principles remain out of reach for millions globally. He cited ongoing violations, ingrained barriers and systemic unfairness as threats to the human rights vision.

Underscoring justice as the core of rights frameworks, Osigwe advocated thorough reforms of institutions and practices enabling inequality. He pressed decision-makers to reassess policies hindering freedoms.

The senior lawyer closed by calling for collective recommitment to the pursuit of rights-based ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He described the 2023 observance as an urgent reminder of the need for continuous advocacy until freedom, equality and justice become lived truths worldwide.

Osigwe’s remarks convey a reflective take on progress made, deficits persisting and the work still required to fulfil human potential. As governments and civil society units mark the 2023 milestone, his words compellingly orient focus toward the future still to be created guided by the themes of the occasion.
