Glory Agbor, the wife of suspended Cross River State lawmaker Dickson Agbor, has publicly dismissed allegations that her husband physically assaulted her, describing a viral video that appeared to show her with facial injuries as a “false accusation” and suggesting that the footage may have been generated or manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology as part of a political campaign to destroy her husband’s career ahead of upcoming elections.

Mr. Agbor, who represents the Obubra I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, was indefinitely suspended by the Assembly earlier this week following the circulation of the video, which triggered widespread public outrage.

However, in a new video posted online days after the controversy erupted, Mrs. Agbor rejected the allegations in their entirety and insisted that no assault ever took place.

Speaking directly to camera, Mrs. Agbor addressed both Nigerians and the international public, categorically denying that her husband had laid hands on her.

“I am out here to tell Nigerians and all persons both home and abroad that what has been online for the past four to three days is a false accusation and nothing of such actually happened,” she said.

She went further, offering what she described as an alternative explanation for the footage: that it was either artificially generated or doctored, and that the entire episode was orchestrated by political opponents seeking to undermine her husband ahead of elections.

“Maybe it is AI, or they want to use that to blackmail my husband and me. You know the election is around the corner, and maybe they want to use that one to bring him down. Nothing of the sort happened to me,” she declared.

In the video, Mrs. Agbor also directly challenged claims that she had sustained physical injuries, presenting her face to the camera and inviting the public to see for themselves that she bore no marks.

“Look at me, I am okay, I am good. Did you see any marks on my face or anything like that? Nothing of such ever happened,” she said.

The controversy erupted earlier this week after a disturbing video circulated widely on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. The footage appeared to show a woman believed to be Mrs. Agbor in visible distress and bearing facial injuries. In the clip, she was alleged to have been beaten by her husband during a domestic dispute.

The video spread rapidly and triggered a wave of public condemnation, with many Nigerians calling for accountability from the lawmaker. Although the authenticity and full context of the footage remain contested, its circulation fuelled intense online debate about domestic violence and the conduct expected of public officials.

Amid the mounting backlash, the Cross River State House of Assembly moved swiftly, announcing the indefinite suspension of Mr. Agbor from the legislature. The Assembly cited what it described as violent behaviour inconsistent with the ethical expectations of public office.

As of Tuesday, the Assembly had not announced whether it would review Mr. Agbor’s suspension in light of his wife’s latest public statement, despite the lawmaker himself having issued an apology.

Domestic violence cases involving politicians routinely draw significant public attention in Nigeria, where advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) and similar state-level legislation. The VAPP Act, signed into law in 2015, criminalises various forms of violence in private and public life, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence. However, enforcement remains inconsistent across the federation, with many states yet to domesticate the legislation.

The Agbor case has reignited this debate, with some commentators arguing that the Assembly’s swift suspension reflects a welcome shift towards institutional accountability, while others caution against trial by social media and stress the importance of formal investigation before conclusions are drawn.

But an independent verification shows that the original viral video was not manipulated or AI-generated.

The key question now is whether the Cross River State House of Assembly will review or lift Mr. Agbor’s indefinite suspension in light of his wife’s public denial, or whether it will proceed with a formal investigation into the allegations irrespective of her statement.

Mr. Agbor has publicly apologised, though the precise scope and addressee of that apology remain unclear. Mrs. Agbor’s denial, meanwhile, has divided opinion: while some have accepted it at face value, others have pointed out that spousal denials in domestic violence cases are not uncommon and do not, by themselves, resolve questions of whether an assault occurred.
