Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on Nigerian politicians and lawmakers to end the practice of arming jobless youths to disrupt elections, warning that such acts are eroding the country’s democratic foundations and fueling insecurity.

Speaking during a plenary session on Wednesday, the former Edo State governor condemned political violence, stressing that democracy cannot thrive when elections are marred by intimidation and thuggery.

“After every election, crimes increase because those who armed hungry youths for politics cannot retrieve the weapons. These firearms end up being used for robbery, assault, and other criminal activities that destabilize our communities,” Oshiomhole said, highlighting the long-term consequences of such practices on public safety.

He further revealed that during his tenure as governor, he had warned fellow governors that only wealthy political figures could afford military-grade weapons like AK-47 rifles, underlining that electoral violence is often orchestrated and funded from the top levels of political power.

Oshiomhole urged politicians to allow citizens to exercise their democratic rights freely, through credible and peaceful elections devoid of coercion. “If we truly stop violence, elections in Nigeria will be free, fair, and transparent. Citizens will vote without fear, and results will reflect the true will of the people,” he said.

The senator also advised against conducting presidential, governorship, and National Assembly elections on the same day, citing logistical and security challenges. He emphasized the importance of tightening cybersecurity measures as technology becomes increasingly integrated into the voting process, warning that vulnerabilities could compromise election results.

“Once we stop arming youths for elections, 90% of our electoral problems will disappear. The remaining issues can then be addressed through reforms, improved transparency, and adherence to the rule of law,” Oshiomhole concluded.
