Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has condemned the reported killing of Mr. Peter Ihiemekpen, Esq., a Nigerian Bar member, describing it as a “painful and disturbing” incident that should concern not just the victim’s family and colleagues but all citizens committed to human life and the rule of law.

In a press statement, Akangbe noted that when a life is allegedly taken by a law enforcement officer, the matter extends beyond personal tragedy to a public test of accountability and justice. “The powers given to law enforcement officers exist to protect citizens, not to harm them,” he said, emphasizing that any misuse of such powers must be addressed seriously and transparently.

While acknowledging reports that the officer allegedly involved is in custody, Akangbe warned that arrest alone is insufficient. “Justice requires a careful, transparent, and credible investigation that allows the truth to emerge and reassures the public that the process is not compromised,” he said.

The Senior Advocate called for the immediate establishment of an independent panel to investigate the incident fully and openly, stressing that prosecution must follow where wrongdoing is established. He also highlighted the case as a reminder of the urgent need for meaningful police reforms emphasizing professionalism, restraint, and respect for human dignity.

“A society that truly values life must show it through action. Justice for Mr. Peter Ihiemekpen is not only about addressing one tragic loss, but about affirming the kind of country we want to be,” Akangbe concluded.
