Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged politicians across the country to stop focusing on the 2027 elections and instead channel their energy into the development of the people.

Speaking on Friday at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, after addressing students of the Dentistry Department at the University of Calabar, Obi stressed the need to shift political discourse from electoral ambitions to issues that directly impact citizens’ lives.
“We must stop discussing politics and start discussing the development of the people — investing in real, measurable areas such as education, healthcare, and pulling people out of poverty,” Obi declared.
Describing governance as a platform for service, the former Anambra State governor criticized the culture of extravagant spending on political office holders while essential sectors like education are neglected.
“We cannot have a society where we spend millions to buy cars for political office holders while young people are struggling to get tools for quality education. They lack classrooms, chairs — yet we live like stars. It shouldn’t be. We must dismantle it and invest in the critical areas of development,” he said.
Obi, who donated ₦20 million to the University of Calabar’s Dentistry Department for the procurement of five dental chairs, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support the institution in acquiring ten additional chairs. He also encouraged students to take their education seriously, calling it their “greatest asset for global competition.”
Although he declined to discuss politics or his 2027 presidential ambition, Obi maintained that his priority is to address pressing national issues.
“I don’t want to talk about politics or 2027 today. Let’s talk about how the average Nigerian can feed, how children can remain in school, how our hospitals can work. When 2027 comes, we’ll be there and I will surely contest,” he added.
