A lawyer, Mr. Chekwube .O Ebubealor, Esq has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission over an alleged violation of the Fundamental Human Rights of a minor by the name, Miss Chisom Rosemary Ezugwu, and himself by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service on the behest of one ACG passport N.M Zitas, S.D Mohammed and Hajia (full name not known). According to his account, the duo visited the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters, Sauka, FCT Abuja, to guide her (minor) to process her International passport as it was one of the requirements for her to proceed for a scholarship interview. On arrival at the NIS Glass House, on the 21st day of June, 2018, they were interrogated severally by one Hajia. After giving answers to the questions asked, the said Hajia demanded for the death certificate of the minor’s mother, and thereafter the marriage certificate of the minor’s parents as a proof. Due to some difficulties in giving physical evidence, the father of the minor was invited over the phone to clarify some issues, which he did. However, the NIS officer asked why the father was attending a different church other than the one attended by his children. “The ACG passport also asked the father of the minor the church he attends. He replied: Catholic Church. The ACG passport further asked the father of the minor why he allows his children to be attending a different church from his. The father of the minor replied that three (3) of his children, including the minor, attend a different church, which has been exceedingly helpful to them. The ACG passport asked the minor’s father: “so you think that you could be attending a different church while your children will be worshipping in another church”? The minor’s father kept mute at this point. “The ACG passport did not allow me to address and douse the issue before him. I tried so much to get his attention and make him understand the reason why we came to apply for the minor’s international passport but to no avail. However, we were brought to the ACG passport’s office and at that point I brought out to show him the circular about the said scholarship offered by the Ministry of Transport in conjunction with the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC),” he said. He further narrated that after the question, the ACG passport ordered one of the officers in his office to call officers who took them to the detention center, while the minor father was allowed to go home. According to him, they were detained for eight days — from 21st – 28th June, 2018. Howbeit, investigation was carried out by the officers of the NIS at the Anti-Human Trafficking Department at the Mr Harrison’s Center on the 22nd of June, 2018, during which they recorded their statements, including those of the minor’s father who came from home on the said day, and her sponsor who happens to be her mentor, and church teacher. Speaking further, he stated that though they were relased, the minor lost her life time opportunity of the scholarship as by the time of the release, the time for the scholarship window had elapsed. He also noted that despite being denied the opportunity of appearing in court to handle a case for his client, they were fed with poisoned food throughout the detention, especially detergent contaminated tea, which was detrimental to their health, for days. “I and the minor were exposed to all sorts of sicknesses, infections ridden toilets, mosquitoes ridden and unfumigated detention center and environment that has been overwhelmed by grasses, leaking roofs and without electricity for almost the eight (8) days in detention. We were poorly and badly fed and worst of all, detained along with two other mad men at the center. The minor and I were detained, frustrated, suffered depression, humiliated and mocked by NIS officers and above all, suffered psychological trauma for no just cause.” Mr. Chekwube .O Ebubealor, Esq is therefore crying for justice, whilst urging the Commission to judiciously investigate the undue injustice meted out upon them by officers of the NIS. Mr. Ebubealor also copied the Nigerian bar Assocaitionm as well as the Abuja branch of the NBA. ]]>
