In a major milestone for the state’s transportation infrastructure, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday inaugurated the commercial operations of the Lagos Red Line rail, marking a significant leap forward in the city’s mass transit system.

The governor led the inaugural trip, departing from Oyingbo Station at 5:20 p.m. and arriving at Ikeja Station 34 minutes later, amidst jubilation from members of the public who joined the ride.

Taking charge of the boarding announcement, the Governor signalled the start of the train service, which swiftly made its first stop at Yaba Station four minutes later, allowing some passengers to transfer to the Last Mile transport service for their final destinations. The train then continued to Mushin, Oshodi, and Ikeja, where Sanwo-Olu and his entourage disembarked. The entire journey from Oyingbo to Ikeja lasted just 34 minutes.

“This is an experience that we believe will not only help in solving issues around public transportation in Lagos, but will also improve connectivity and reduce the journey time for commuters in traversing the city,” Sanwo-Olu said, describing his experience as “smooth and outstanding.”

He further stated, “The general public can now feel what we have done in mass transportation. We have fulfilled our promises, especially on the Red Line, just as we did on the Blue Line. From this evening, there will be regular scheduled train services from Agbado to Oyingbo and back.”

Additionally, Sanwo-Olu revealed that the state expects to receive more rolling stocks for the Red Line next year, which will enhance the frequency and efficiency of the train service.

The launch of the Red Line rail commercial operations is a testament to the Lagos State Government’s commitment to solving traffic and transportation challenges, and residents can look forward to easier, faster commutes.
