A high-level delegation from the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Wednesday.

The delegation’s mission was to formally present a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment on the LP’s leadership and to urge INEC to recognize Senator Nenadi Usman as the party’s National Chairman.

The visit follows a unanimous decision by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, which set aside a judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had earlier affirmed Julius Abure as National Chairman. The apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to decide on the LP’s leadership dispute, emphasizing that the matter was internal to the party. It allowed the appeal filed by Senator Usman and another party leader while dismissing the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction as unmeritorious.

Speaking during the visit, Governor Otti explained that the Labour Party leadership deemed it necessary to engage INEC directly to promote clarity, strengthen mutual understanding, and ensure full alignment with the current realities within the party.

The LP delegation was warmly received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, and other National Commissioners. The meeting featured constructive dialogue focused on deepening collaboration and upholding democratic principles.

In his remarks, Mr. Olumekun reiterated INEC’s commitment to neutrality, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in discharging its constitutional duties. He assured the delegation that the commission would study the documents presented and act in accordance with the law.
