The National Transition Committee of the Labour Party has disclosed plans to hold a fresh convention and congresses to elect new party executives across wards and local governments in the 36 states of the federation and at the national level.

The crises in the LP began with Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa laying claim to the national chairmanship of the party.

Loyalists from both camps were at loggerheads in April 2023 following a court judgment restraining Abure and three others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

But Abure fought back fiercely to retain his seat with the help of the parent body, Nigeria Labour Congress, under the leadership of its National President, Joe Ajaero.

However, Abure fell out of favor with the NLC following a contentious national convention held in Anambra that returned him and all his loyal members of the National Working Committee to office three months ago.

The action had compelled the NLC Political Commission to void the new leadership and set up a transition committee, saddled with the task of engaging stakeholders of the party and conducting a fresh convention in 90 days.

The Transition Committee Chairman, Abdulwaheed Omar, in a statement by the Chairman Sub-committee on Media and Publicity, Tony Akeni, disclosed that following the stakeholders meeting of May 8, the NTC would unveil plans for the party’s national convention.

On Tuesday, the NTC and their supporters stormed the national secretariat of the LP in Abuja attempting to disrupt the Abure-led National Working Committee meeting.

The 2023 LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, called for calm, stressing the need for reconciliation.

However, the Omar-led NTC, in a statement on Wednesday, said, “The NLC Political Commission has fulfilled its role as mandated by the Constitution of the Labour Party, the consent judgment delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, and the INEC mediated terms of the settlement with the immediate past leadership of the Labour Party and has birthed the National Transition Committee, the major task of which is to organise an all-inclusive and expansive convention for the Labour Party.

“This membership mobilisation and leadership recruitment process will start from congresses in the over 8,000 political wards in Nigeria to local government and state congresses, culminating in an open and inclusive national convention.

“In the coming days, the National Transition Committee through the work of its various sub-committees will unveil the roadmap for a first of its kind in transparent, credible, and inclusive National Convention of any political party before now. Therefore, we urge all members of the Labour Party and aspiring members to keep their ears to the ground as we go to work to rebuild a popular and democratic party anchored on the refined values of honesty, transparency, popular participation, and social content in governance.”

Omar added that though the committee expected a revolt from aggrieved members, it would ensure to organise a national convention that would be inclusive of all party faithful.

He urged the Abure factional leadership to hand over the assets and funds of the party to the transition committee, failure of which, he stressed that legal action would be taken against violators.
