Residents abducted during the deadly terrorist attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have regained their freedom after about six months in captivity.

The Kwara State Government announced the development on Wednesday in a brief statement posted on its official Facebook page, praising President Bola Tinubu, security agencies and all those who played a role in securing the victims’ release.

“Woro kidnap victims regain freedom. Alhamdulillah and kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, security forces, and everyone who played a role in this huge feat. We are grateful!” the statement read.

The announcement was also made by Olayinka Fafoluyi, media aide to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who described the release as a major feat.

However, the state government did not immediately disclose the exact number of victims released, the circumstances surrounding their freedom or whether any ransom or conditions were involved.

The victims were abducted during the February 3, 2026 attack on Woro and Nuku communities, when suspected Boko Haram-linked terrorists reportedly invaded the rural communities on motorcycles and launched a coordinated assault that lasted several hours.

The attack was described as one of the deadliest in Kwara State’s history, with reports indicating that scores of people were killed, while homes, businesses and other properties were destroyed.

Some reports also claimed that more than 100 people, including women and children, were abducted during the invasion, while local sources, including the village head of Woro, Salihu Umar, put the number of abducted persons at about 176.

Umar’s wives and daughters were also said to be among those taken away by the terrorists.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage and led President Tinubu to order intensified military operations in the affected area as security forces moved to rescue the captives and restore calm to communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.

In April, a video circulated on social media showing one of the abducted women appealing to the Kwara State Government to intensify efforts to secure their release.

Speaking from captivity and surrounded by other victims, the woman said the abducted group included pregnant women, young children and sick persons.

“We are from Woro in Kaiama Local Government. We were taken on February 3, and today is April 8. This is the last opportunity they have given us,” she said in the video.

The release of the victims has brought relief to families and residents of the affected communities, many of whom had lived with uncertainty since the February attack.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and the Kwara State Government had yet to provide full details on the rescue operation, the number of victims freed or whether any suspects were arrested.
