A Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Kunle Edun who is also the current National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has called for the reformation of the Nigerian criminal laws to protect women from sex offenders.

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), he said: “Our criminal laws are insufficient to address the increasing rate of rape and other sex offences.”

Mr. Kunle Edun went on to highlight five ways the laws could be reformed. He suggested the creation of online registry of sex offenders to be accessed by the public, rape convicts shouldn’t be allowed access to children under the age of 10 after serving their prison term among others.

Kunle Edun said: “We need legislative reforms that will institutuinalize the following:

“1. Creation of a Central Registry of sex offenders in Nigeria by the Nigerian Police Force and to be accessed to every one online.

“2. All sex offenders must be put on parole supervision for at last 10 years after serving their sentences.

“3. Sex offenders must not have access or allowed to be close to children for at least 10 years after serving their sentences.

“4. Sex offenders must be compelled to always report to their parole officers anytime they are leaving the town they are resident, for proper monitoring.

“5. Sex offenders must not be allowed to work in schools, hospitals, Charity organisations or any social institution.”
