Detained lawyer, Mr. Kelvin Okorie, is set to regain his freedom after meeting the bail conditions imposed by the vacation court of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on January 2, 2025.

The court, presided over by Hon. Justice Mohammed Zubairu, had granted Mr. Okorie bail in the sum of ₦10 million with one surety in like sum. The surety was required to be a resident within the court’s jurisdiction, possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN), and either be a Federal Civil Servant of at least Grade Level 14 or a recognized businessperson with a registered business in Abuja.

The legal team, led by senior lawyers Kunle Edun, SAN, and Vincent Adodo, Esq., had earlier filed an Originating Motion for the enforcement of Mr. Okorie’s fundamental rights. The motion was supported by a Motion Exparte, argued by Samuel Ihensekhien Jnr., seeking interim reliefs for bail pending the determination of the substantive application.

The bail perfection process was facilitated with the collaboration of activist Deji Adeyanju, a prominent member of the Civil Liberties Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

ORDER OF COURT

Mr. Okorie had been in detention since September 10, 2024, following his arrest by the Nigerian Navy and subsequent transfer to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). His prolonged detention without trial had sparked concerns about constitutional breaches.
