Outgoing Kebbi State Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Muhammad Ambursam, has urged the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) to canvass the independence of the Judiciary in order to ensure proper interpretation of laws and Nigeria’s constitution.

Ambursa, who stated this during an award dinner organised for eminent personalities in the Judiciary sector in the state, also announced his retirement from the public service due to the attainment of the mandatory age of 65.
The outgoing CJ, while addressing judges and other members of the judiciary, said: “The independence of the judiciary means more than absence of mere interference with the judiciary function from whatever perspective. It also implies adequate funding in order to enable it perform optimally to meet the challenges in modern times.”
While stressing the importance of separation of powers in a democracy, he implored judiciary workers to always insist on the independence of the judiciary.
“For the Judiciary to succeed, it needs to be independent; it also needs the support and cooperation of the other two arms of government, while the doctrine of separation of powers should also be effectively pursued as provided for in the constitution. This will ensure harmony and coordination in the exercise of governmental power with a view to achieving good governance for the citizens,” he said.
Earlier, the National President of JUSUN, Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adam, commended Kebbi State judiciary workers for organising the event. He further stressed that the union would continue to agitate for the judiciary’s independence and financial autonomy.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of JUSUN, Comrade Umar Bawa, commended the outgoing CJ for taking many initiatives which he noted have brought development to the Judiciary system in the state.
