OBRA Legal LP on August 17, 2026, hosted a series of mentorship and interactive sessions aimed at exposing young people and aspiring legal practitioners to the realities, values and responsibilities of the legal profession, with Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu of the Court of Appeal, Maiduguri Division, leading conversations on judicial service, integrity and public confidence in the justice system.

The engagement formed part of activities at the firm involving legal interns as well as participants in the OBRA Foundation Launch Pad 1.0, an initiative designed to introduce secondary school students to the legal profession and encourage them to begin thinking seriously about careers in law.
During an interactive session with interns, Justice Ogakwu reflected on his years on the Bench and emphasised that the administration of justice is fundamentally rooted in public confidence.
He explained that a judicial officer, in determining cases, must look beyond the personalities appearing before the court and concentrate on the facts and evidence properly presented for adjudication.
The Justice was also asked what advice he would give young people aspiring to become judges. In response, he encouraged them to develop genuine passion and interest in the legal profession and to find satisfaction in the work they do.
The session also provided an opportunity for participants to raise questions about judicial life and some of the public perceptions surrounding judges and the judiciary.
Beyond the engagement with Justice Ogakwu, the interns also held an introductory and interactive session with Nnezi Ivenso, FCIArb, Q.Med, a Partner at OBRA Legal with a Master’s degree in Financial Services Law and experience in arbitration.
Ivenso spoke about combining professional responsibilities with family life, telling the participants that boundaries and discipline remained important.
“Office work is for the office, and family is for family,” she said.

She encouraged the young participants to remain passionate about their chosen careers, put in the necessary work and avoid becoming excessively driven by money.
She also cautioned against overdependence on artificial intelligence, stressing the need for young lawyers and students to continue developing their own skills, judgment and professional abilities rather than allowing technology to replace independent thinking.
The programme also included a mentorship conversation with Peace Usiosefe, ACArb, Ch. HRC, during which discussions focused on the internship experience, building meaningful professional connections and providing continuing guidance throughout the participants’ stay at the firm.
In another major component of the day’s activities, OBRA Legal welcomed secondary school students into the OBRA Foundation Launch Pad 1.0, giving them an opportunity to enter a professional legal environment, interact with practitioners and ask questions about the future of law.
The initiative was conceived on the premise that young people should not necessarily have to wait until university or adulthood before being exposed to the possibilities available within the legal profession.
The onboarding session was described as one marked by curiosity and enthusiasm, with the students encouraged to think broadly about law, innovation, service and the different pathways open to future legal professionals.
Justice Ogakwu also interacted with participants in the programme, reinforcing the message that the legal profession extends beyond statutes, courtrooms and judicial precedents to questions of purpose, courage, service and responsibility.
OBRA Foundation said the initiative reflected its belief that preserving and transforming the legal profession requires deliberate investment in the younger generation that will eventually inherit and reshape it.
The engagements also underscored the role of mentorship in legal development, with participants encouraged to view professional growth as extending beyond academic knowledge of the law to include discipline, integrity, relationships, judgment and continuous learning.
The participants expressed appreciation to OBRA Legal LP for creating what they described as an environment where learning goes beyond the classroom, as well as to Ikechukwu Onuoma, SAN, for the vision and opportunity behind the programme.
They also acknowledged the contributions of lawyers, mentors and fellow interns involved in the experience, describing the programme as an opportunity to learn directly from members of the Bench and Bar while developing a deeper understanding of the values expected of future legal practitioners.
