Over 3,000 women, under the aegis of Women for Women Community in Nigeria, have protested against the alleged embarrassment and humiliation of the former acting Chief Judge of Kebbi State, Justice Elizabeth Karatu, by a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps member on her last day in office.

The refusal of the Kebbi State House of Assembly to confirm Justice Karatu, who was appointed acting CJ in October 2018, following the retirement of the former CJ, Bala Mairiga, who left the bench the same month, as permanent CJ of the state, allegedly because she is a Christian, had met with outcries.

A video which went viral had shown an NSCDC official preventing Justice Karatu from entering the courtroom in Birnin-Kebbi to perform her official duties.

In their petition to Governor Atiku Bagudu, the women demanded Justice Karatu receive her full entitlements as the CJ of state.

In the petition by its Convener, Toyo Nkoyo, dated July 7, the group condemned the developments.

Nkoyo said, “We note with some interest both from the official account of your government and the informal contacts by some of our leaders with significant individuals in your government that the unfortunate and avoidable turn of events in the matter of Justice Elizabeth Karatu has festered for much longer than expected.

“We observe that since that dispute went viral, the chances of an amicable resolution have become harder and peace appears to be the less travelled route. Justice Elizabeth Karatu has served her entire productive life in the service of the Kebbi State Government and has no other constituency to seek redress and/or recognition from.

“The alleged accommodation given to her by you is an indication that she was fully qualified to serve as Chief Judge of Kebbi State.

“Her failure to be so appointed for the reasons alleged seems to have precipitated a chain of unprofessional responses culminating in her Lordship being physically prevented from exercising her duties before finally bowing out from the judiciary this month.

“We urge you in the light of the above, the cordial relations with the judiciary and the concerns this issue has generated across the country, to show decisive leadership by ensuring that this matter is not drawn out any further and Justice Karatu receives her full entitlements as a Chief Judge of Kebbi State (whether acting or not).”
