Examination boards in Kenya and Uganda are now reaching out to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria to verify the records of Nigerian candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in their countries. This development was revealed in a document prepared by JAMB for the 2024 policy meeting.

JAMB emphasized in the document that it would not falsify any student’s records and stressed the importance of protecting the reputation of Nigeria’s tertiary education system. This comes after the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the verification of degree certificates from Uganda, Kenya, Benin Republic, Togo, and other countries due to allegations of certificate racketeering.

In March, the Federal Government established an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling to investigate the activities of certificate racketeers. This was in response to an investigative report by Daily Nigerian, which exposed the operations of fake degree mills in the Benin Republic. The reporter, Umar Audu, revealed how he obtained a degree within six weeks and even went on to participate in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in Nigeria.

As a result of the investigative report, which uncovered the illegalities committed by some tertiary institutions in West African countries, the Nigerian government placed a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, upon receiving the committee’s report, stated that holders of fake degrees from both Nigerian and foreign universities would be removed from the system. The committee’s recommendations emphasized the need for universities in Nigeria to conduct their admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) and mandatorily submit matriculation lists to the Federal Ministry of Education.

JAMB, in the obtained document, noted that Kenyan and Ugandan examination boards are now writing to them to confirm the records presented by Nigerian candidates seeking admission in their countries. JAMB assured that it would not falsify any records.

The Federal Government has also mandated all higher institutions in Nigeria to regularly submit their matriculation lists to the Federal Ministry of Education within three months of their matriculation ceremonies. The lists must be submitted through a dedicated channel provided by JAMB. This initiative is one of the recommendations made by the Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling to combat fake degree mills and racketeers in the country.
