Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has faulted the senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, over his claim that 30,000 people lost their lives due to the activities of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the South East.

The group challenged Kalu to provide evidence to support his claim, insisting that neither Nnamdi Kanu nor IPOB is responsible for the death of any Igbo person or the destruction of businesses in the region.

IPOB maintained that Kanu and its members have instead been the victims of attacks, extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and judicial persecution allegedly carried out by state-sponsored security agencies.

Accusing the senator of trading his own kinsman for political gain, IPOB condemned what it described as Kalu’s false statements, calling them fabricated and part of a deliberate campaign to undermine the group and its leader.

In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB alleged that the insecurity, killings, and destruction recorded in the South East were orchestrated by the Nigerian government and certain politicians from the region to blackmail IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The group maintained that its struggle has remained non-violent despite government-backed security forces arresting, torturing, and carrying out extrajudicial killings of its members.

The statement read in part: “It is regrettable that Orji Uzor Kalu, for whom Mazi Nnamdi Kanu fervently advocated during his imprisonment by the Nigerian government for embezzling Abia State funds, collaborated with the government to persecute him. A leopard cannot change its spots. A traitor remains a traitor. Orji Uzor Kalu must remember that he is a former convict whose struggles are not over, as the record of his offences will eventually be exposed.

“It is now clear that Senator Kalu was among those who colluded with the APC and Tinubu’s government to detain Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto without communication, giving them room to fabricate lies about him.

“Orji Uzor Kalu’s statements show that he was part of the group that pressured Justice James Omotosho to impose a grossly unjust sentence on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for advocating for his people. The people of Biafra should ask Orji Uzor Kalu why he is undermining his own brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

IPOB demanded that Kalu provide proof for his claims, reaffirming that Kanu and the group bear no responsibility for deaths or destruction in the South East since 2015.

The statement continued: “As Governor of Abia State for eight years and even afterward, Orji Uzor Kalu has remained an economic and security burden. He is still facing trial by the EFCC.

“All blackmail against IPOB formed part of his prior agreement with the federal government to weaken the movement. In 2015, during our leader’s detention, he attempted to dismantle IPOB and failed. He was among those who organised the abduction and extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to Nigeria.

“Evidence has consistently shown that IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu have been the targets of military aggression, violence, and killings backed by the State.

“The Nigerian government and its corrupt politicians are responsible for insecurity, unidentified gunmen, and violence in the East, as well as the terror ravaging the North. IPOB has repeatedly called for an independent investigation into the killings in the South East since 2015.

“Unfortunately, the government and its politicians have refused to permit an independent investigation because they know the identities of the perpetrators. Just as Northern elites are involved in terrorism in the North, certain Eastern politicians, especially those in the APC, are complicit in the insecurity affecting the Southeast.

“Every act of blackmail against IPOB is part of Orji Uzor Kalu’s long-standing pact with the federal government to destroy the movement. He poses a political threat. The atrocities he committed as governor, including the misuse of the Bakassi Boys against political opponents, will eventually come to light. Posterity will be the ultimate judge.”
