On the occasion of the 2020 international human rights day, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch has stated that the theme of the celebration, “Recover Better- Stand Up For Human Rights” is not only apt but accurately envisages the challenges or vicissitudes brought by the year 2020.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Branch Chair, Mr. Bulus Y. Atsen which was made available to TheNigeriaLawyer.

He said “The year 2020 has been challenging globally and locally. It started with the Covid-19 Pandemic which brought about lockdowns, which was followed by widespread unrest as captured by the #EndSARS Protests. The protests led to the unearthing of incidents of human rights abuse across the country.”

Meanwhile, he noted that there is a need for us to stand in defence of human rights for a better recovery in the nation.

“The theme for this year’s International Human Rights Day, “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights” tells us that despite all we have passed through, there is hope that we will recover better if we choose to stand for human rights. As human beings, we all deserve to enjoy fundamental rights regardless of class, creed, race, religion or nationality”, he said.

In addition, he added that there is a need to sustain the on going awareness campaign against gender based violence, noting that “It is, however, pertinent to state here that the expected recovery can only be sustained if we all continue to create the needed awareness on GBV and other rights abuses targeted at women and the vulnerable among us.”

“In this way, we can build a Nigeria we will all be proud to call home”, he concluded.
