Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong’s law firm, Inibehe Effiong Chambers, has written to the United Bank for Africa (UBA), demanding the immediate reopening of the Take-It-Back Movement’s account.

The account was frozen on the alleged orders of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) due to the group’s planned protest against hardship and hunger in the country.

In a letter addressed to UBA, the law firm threatened to take legal action against the bank if it fails to reopen the frozen account within 24 hours. The letter stated, “We are by this letter demanding that you offer a well-detailed, formal and immediate written explanation for the freezing of our Client’s account within 24 hours of the receipt of this letter.”

The Take-It-Back Movement, a human rights organisation, had earlier accused UBA of freezing its account on the instructions of the DSS over its call for #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. The organisation vowed to take legal action against UBA for the alleged unlawful action if the account is not unfrozen within the stipulated timeframe.

In a post on its X handle (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the Take-It-Back Movement said, “It has now come to our attention that @UBAGroup has frozen our account on the instructions of the DSS over our involvement in the forthcoming protest. We describe this action as lawless, and demand our account be unfrozen immediately within the next 24hours, without which a legal action will be instituted against @UBAGroup.”

The controversy surrounding the frozen account has sparked debates about the role of financial institutions in matters related to freedom of expression and the right to protest. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for similar situations in the future.

As of the time of reporting, UBA has not publicly responded to the demands made by Inibehe Effiong Chambers on behalf of the Take-It-Back Movement. The 24-hour ultimatum given by the law firm is set to expire soon, and legal action may be forthcoming if the account remains frozen.
