The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties and politicians against engaging in public campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that such actions constitute a clear breach of the Electoral Act.
This follows growing concerns over open canvassing by political actors despite the absence of an official election timetable.
In a statement on Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified that the Commission has yet to release the schedule of activities for the 2027 elections.
“To that extent, party primaries have not been held, and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election,” he said.
Oyekanmi stressed that while Nigerians are free to discuss and express opinions on political matters, formal campaigns or soliciting votes at this stage remain illegal.
“Any open campaign or canvassing for votes for the 2027 General Election is not only inappropriate but also a violation of the Electoral Act,” he said.
Quoting Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, he noted that campaigns are legally permitted only within 150 days before polling day and must cease 24 hours before the election.
He also referenced Section 95(1), which mandates that campaigns be conducted in accordance with INEC’s regulations.
“The attention of all political parties in Nigeria was drawn to this situation at our last quarterly consultative meeting, and the Commission expects full compliance with the law,” Oyekanmi concluded.
