The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has demonstrated exemplary transparency in its ongoing elections for various offices, setting a new standard for democratic processes in the country.

The Elections Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), led by Oluseun Abimbola SAN, has ensured a seamless and transparent voting process that has garnered praise from the legal community.

Jibrin Samuel Okutepa SAN, a prominent figure in the Nigerian legal community, commended the leadership of the NBA and ECNBA for their outstanding work. “The Nigerian Bar Association, through its ECNBA, has shown what transparency in democratic processes means. The ongoing elections to the various offices of the association are so easy to follow, and they are very transparent,” he said.

Okutepa SAN highlighted the advantages of the NBA’s digital voting system, which has eliminated the possibility of multiple voting, manipulations, and ballot stuffing. “You cannot vote more than once. There is no room for manipulations. No ballot stuffing. The voting is seamless, and there are no glitches of any kind. The results are seen in real-time, and even the time each lawyer casts his or her vote is known and seen after voting,” he explained.

The success of the NBA elections has prompted calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to learn from the ECNBA’s approach. “INEC needs to learn from Seun Abimbola SAN-led ECNBA. NBA has shown leadership in this area, and I must commend the leadership of NBA and that of ECNBA for a job well done,” Okutepa SAN remarked.

The incoming president of the NBA, whoever emerges victorious, will face numerous challenges in the next two years. Okutepa SAN emphasized the importance of uniting the bar, advocating for electoral and justice reforms, and restoring the NBA to its vibrant state. “The bar is in serious need of unity. The bar is dormant and too patronizing of the evils in our democracy. The incoming president must bring the bar back to its vibrant state,” he urged.

Okutepa SAN also called upon the incoming NBA leadership to tackle the obstacles hindering electoral justice in the country. “The reckless roadblocks to the attainment of electoral justice in Nigeria must be tackled by the NBA. We cannot afford to close eyes to obvious infractions of our democratic rights and sovereignty of the people in electoral jurisprudence by reading into electoral laws what was never intended by the draftsman of our laws,” he stated.
