Former Canadian lawmaker Kaycee Madu has slammed Bashir Ahmad, a former aide of the late ex-president Muhammadu Buhari, over his alleged support for Islamic terrorism and extremism.

Madu, who represented Edmonton-South West in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, condemned Ahmad’s consistent excuses made on behalf of terrorists who have continued to bedevil states across Nigeria’s Northern region.

A former Minister of Justice and Solicitor General of Alberta, Madu said Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other terror groups are terrorizing Nigeria, murdering Christians and Muslims, burning churches, and wreaking havoc on non-Muslim communities in the Middle Belt of the country.

Madu’s reaction followed an interaction between Ahmad and an X user who condemned the life sentence handed to Nnamdi Kanu by a Federal High Court judge in Abuja.

Ahmad had described the X user as an international terrorist apologist, triggering the lawmaker’s response.

Madu wrote on X, “Whilst not holding brief for anyone, in a sane country governed by the rule of law, justice, equity, fairness, blind to tribalism, someone like you @BashirAhmaad would have been charged for several crimes, including criminal incitement of violence, support of extreme Islamist terrorism, and terrorism in general.”

He also stated that the Northeast has remained ungovernable due to the activities of these terrorists, and that schoolchildren, women, and innocent citizens are constantly raped and sold to Islamic extremists in hundreds.

Highlighting the effect of terrorist attacks on the Nigerian military’s strength, Madu said governors and top government officials have been fingered as founders and sponsors of these criminal acts.

Recalling his experiences in Nigeria, Madu also recounted his numerous interactions with these terrorists as a judicial officer in Borno State.

He said, “The founders and sponsors of Boko Haram have been governors, commissioners, ministers, and we even find them in the highest office of the land, the presidency.

“Note: Before you spew nonsense:

“First, there is a deep love in my heart for the Kanuri people of Borno State. I love them to this day. I enjoyed every aspect of my time in Borno State. I consider the Kanuris a salt-of-the-earth kind of people. I would always wish them God’s tidings and best wishes. What they have endured is evil.

“Second, I love Nigeria and wish her success. I have always believed in the extraordinary potential of Nigeria. I have always believed Nigeria holds the key to Africa’s and black peoples’ greatness and the chance to achieve their potential.

“Third, I have also insisted that Nigeria cannot get to the promised land with its current policies and the grave injustice and marginalization of the Igbos of Nigeria.

“Fourth, I began my legal career at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General of Borno State under Mohammed Tahir Monguno, serving Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and the Federal Legal Aid Council, Borno State.

“I have come face to face with members of Boko Haram from various prisons in remote areas of Borno State. I have interviewed them and dealt with them in courts in Maiduguri.

“All I want is for Nigeria to do well!” Madu noted.

Ahmad has on several occasions faced condemnation from social media users over his stance on the activities of insurgents and core Muslims across the globe.

In a previous post on X on December 12, 2024, the former presidential aide described himself as an Islamic extremist.

He wrote on X, “It is an honour to be called an Islamic extremist.”

He, however, deleted the post following several outbursts from citizens on social media over the implications of such a statement from a presidential aide.

In 2015, he expressed his stance on punishment for blasphemy by stating, “I can’t pretend or keep silent. I support the death penalty for blasphemy. That’s my belief, and I do not and will never support #SaveKanoNine.”

His post followed the sentencing of nine people to death for blasphemy by an Islamic court in Kano State.
