In a letter dated December 13, 2024, Mrs. Excel Ihekweme, the wife of Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, has appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene in the alleged illegal detention and mistreatment of her husband by the Nigerian Police.

According to Mrs. Ihekweme, her husband, a patriotic Nigerian and dedicated public servant, was unjustly detained for criticizing the governor and urging him to prioritize the needs of Imo citizens. She stated that on November 27, 2024, unidentified armed men forcefully abducted Dr. Ihekweme from his home without a warrant, due process, or access to legal counsel. His phone was confiscated, and he was denied necessary medical care.

Mrs. Ihekweme further revealed that her husband is currently being held at the Tiger Base police unit, subjected to inhumane treatment, and unjustly accused of sponsoring the Eastern Security Network (ESN)—allegations she claims are baseless and aimed at discrediting his integrity and silencing his voice.

In her letter to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Mrs. Ihekweme described the ordeal as a violation of her husband’s constitutional rights and a grave affront to the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and good governance. She appealed for the immediate and unconditional release of her husband, stating that the arrest and detention without recourse to justice or medical attention have left the family, including their children, traumatized and mentally distressed.

Mrs. Ihekweme expressed her trust in the NHRC to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice prevails for her husband. The NHRC has yet to respond to the appeal, and the Nigerian Police have not issued any statement regarding the allegations.

The case highlights the ongoing concerns about human rights violations and the suppression of freedom of expression in Nigeria. The international community and human rights organizations are closely monitoring the situation, calling for a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.
