“Behaviour Deeply Disturbing, Stands In Direct Violation Of Our Values” — School Maintains Zero-Tolerance Policy Toward Bullying, Cultism, Intimidation; Alumna Recounts Armed Robbery, Suicide Attempts, Drug Habits

The management of Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin City, Edo State, has expelled students involved in a bullying and physical assault incident captured in a video that has been circulating online.

In an official statement dated March 13, the school said it was aware of the footage showing what it described as a serious case of bullying involving its students.

The statement was signed by the management of Igbinedion Montessori Nursery/Primary School and Igbinedion Junior/Senior Secondary School, including Acting Principal Mrs. Ann Apeh, Mr. Towe V. Iroro, Mr. O. E. Akinkuowo and Mr. Collins Emokpae.

“We are aware of a video currently circulating online showing a serious incident of bullying and physical assault involving students at the school,” the statement read.

According to the school management, the actions displayed in the video contradict the institution’s core principles and disciplinary standards.

“The behaviour shown in the video is deeply disturbing and stands in direct violation of the values and standards we uphold. The school maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, cultism, intimidation, harassment, and any form of violence,” the statement said.

Following what the school described as an immediate investigation, those found responsible were expelled from the institution.

“Following an immediate investigation, the students responsible have been EXPELLED from the school with immediate effect. Such conduct will never be tolerated within our school community,” the management stated.

The school emphasised that the wellbeing and protection of its students remain its top priority, adding that steps were already being taken to support those affected by the incident.

“Our priority remains the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every student. We are providing support to those affected and are working closely with their families to ensure the matter is addressed with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement added.

Management also confirmed that the case had been reported to the relevant authorities and that the institution was cooperating fully with them.

“The incident has been reported to the appropriate authorities and knowing that the students are minors; the school is cooperating fully,” it said.

The school further expressed appreciation to parents and guardians for their cooperation during the period.

“We thank all our parents and guardians for their co-operation and standing with the school,” the statement concluded.

Earlier, a video where the now expelled students were seen brutally assaulting their colleague caused a national outrage.

Some Nigerians have also called for the prosecution of the now expelled students.

An alumna of the school has come forward with disturbing revelations about conditions at Igbinedion Secondary School.

“See, I was taking a little mental health break from Instagram, but then somebody sent me a video about my alma mater, Igbinedion Secondary School in Benin City in Nigeria, and I just had to hop on here. Because when I was saying it, it almost seemed like I was making things up. When I was trying to tell you people the conditions of that school, it might have seemed like I was exaggerating. So I’m grateful for social media, I’m grateful for videos, so that you can all see what I was talking about,” she stated.

She explained that the video circulating online was “not that bad” compared to what students experienced at the school.

“Those of us that went to that school know that video is not that bad. And the thing is, I know a lot of times in Nigerian community, we want a perfect prophet. We want a perfect advocate. We want somebody that’s blameless. It’s not possible. We’re all human beings. So those of us that went to that school really need to push and advocate against things like this.”

She emphasized that children’s brains are not developed enough to regulate such behavior when it is normalized, placing responsibility on adults in charge.

“I recall boys slapping girls. I recall boys taking off belts and flogging girls in open spaces in the middle of the day. And honestly, where were the adults?”

Regarding the school’s statement, she noted: “It has been brought to my attention that the school made a statement. Here it goes. To show you their level of incompetency, one of the names on the list at the bottom is not even alive. From what I understand, Mr. Akinkowo is not even alive anymore, yet his name is on that document as principal of senior school.”

She recounted a particularly disturbing incident: “When I attended Igbinedion Secondary School, armed robbers broke into girls’ hostel, and a girl that ran to call matron was shot at by these armed robbers. And I need for you to know that Igbinedion Education Center in Benin City, Nigeria, did not notify our parents.”

She stated that when a student’s older sister tried to warn other parents the next day, school authorities responded harshly.

“I want you to know that the principal, or maybe she was head of center at that time, God rest her soul, slapped that young lady, called her a prostitute, and told her that if the robbers had tried to assault her, and they did, that it was her fault because she was a prostitute.”

“You wanna know what Igbinedion did after that? They locked us in the dorm so that we couldn’t come out and tell other parents not to drop their kids off, and so that we couldn’t ask people to call our parents to tell them that we had been robbed and shot at the night before.”

The alumna revealed shocking details about student desperation: “Children attempted suicide to get out of that school before they now decided that joining the ranks and beating people up and joining this bad behavior was the only way to survive. I personally jumped off a building and tried to kill myself in the year two thousand to get out of that school.”

She stated that a friend and classmate tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan three times to escape life at Igbinedion.

“Many children picked up drug habits. Many children picked up violent behavior, which they still have not been able to recover from. Last year, in July of twenty twenty-five, I went to Mexico and cremated my brother and brought his ashes home. He lived his life with a drug problem that he picked up in Igbinedion that he was never able to shake.”
