The Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, has confirmed the recovery and evacuation of a python and other wild animals from the residence of Ahmed Idris, a former Accountant General of the Federation. The python’s escape triggered panic across Daneji and nearby communities in Kano State, including Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki.
Also found in Idris’ home were a crocodile and a lion cub. Residents reported sleepless nights until the python was safely captured.
Speaking in a radio interview, Muhammad disclosed that Idris voluntarily surrendered the animals to authorities following the public concern. He noted that while Idris possessed a valid license under Nigeria’s Wild Animal Law to keep the animals, public safety concerns prompted their transfer to Kano Zoo.
“There is a law called the Wild Animal Law which allows certain species to be kept at home under license,” Muhammad explained. “Endangered species like parrots and vultures, however, must be housed in zoos to ensure conservation.”
He confirmed that all animals had been moved safely at night to avoid public unrest and added that none of them had reached a stage where they posed imminent danger.
“The lion is still a cub, and we verified the animals were properly kept. But as a precaution and due to the neighbours’ concerns, they have now been relocated to the zoo,” he said.
Muhammad stressed the importance of annual license renewals to assess when animals must be relocated. “Before any animal becomes potentially harmful, it should already be in our custody,” he added.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed that an investigation is underway and that Idris has been invited for questioning over the matter.
Residents who spoke with Daily Trust described their fear and unease during the days the python was missing.
“We were sleeping with one eye open due to fear,” said Aminu Balarabe, a local resident. “Even if it’s a cub, safety should never be compromised.”
Another resident, Hayatuddeen Muhammad, said wild animals should never be kept in residential areas. “It’s unfortunate. Idris is a good man, but this posed a real danger,” he said.
Ahmed Idris served as Accountant General of the Federation during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was arrested in 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly misappropriating N109.5 billion in public funds.
