The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has commenced the tracking of Federal Government-funded projects worth more than ₦1 billion across Osun State as part of efforts to ensure accountability and value for public funds.

The Team Lead of the ICPC tracking exercise, Mrs Mary Oke, disclosed the development on Wednesday in Osogbo.

Oke said the exercise was designed to determine whether government-funded projects were executed according to approved specifications and whether Nigerians were receiving value for money spent on the projects.

According to her, the exercise will cover all three senatorial districts in Osun State — Osun Central, Osun East and Osun West.

Projects selected for inspection include road construction, installation of solar-powered streetlights, skill acquisition initiatives and empowerment programmes.

The Commission will also track grants reportedly provided to vulnerable Nigerians, including widows, persons with disabilities and elderly persons.

Other projects to be inspected include the construction of community halls and renovation of community libraries, among other Federal Government-funded interventions across the state.

Oke explained that the exercise forms part of the ICPC’s constituency project tracking initiative aimed at monitoring the utilisation of public resources and ensuring that projects appropriated and funded by government actually benefit their intended communities.

“The exercise, which includes assessing the status of various constituency projects, is also to ensure that public resources are judiciously utilised to deliver quality infrastructure and services to citizens,” she said.

She stressed that the Commission would examine the status and quality of the selected projects to determine whether contractors and implementing agencies complied with specifications and other requirements attached to the projects.

Oke also called on residents of beneficiary communities and civil society organisations to cooperate with ICPC officials during the exercise.

“Relevant stakeholders, including community members and civil society organisations, should support the tracking exercise by providing the commission with relevant information that can aid in achieving its objectives,” she said.

The Commission said information from communities would assist its teams in determining whether projects were actually delivered, whether beneficiaries received the interventions allocated to them and whether public funds were properly utilised.

The tracking exercise also covers empowerment programmes and grants where physical infrastructure may not necessarily be available for inspection, making information from intended beneficiaries particularly relevant to the assessment.

ICPC said the overall objective remains ensuring value for money, accountability and transparency in the implementation of public projects.

The Commission’s constituency and executive projects tracking initiative is part of its preventive approach to corruption, under which government-funded projects are physically inspected to determine whether they have been executed in accordance with their approved terms.

The latest exercise will therefore subject selected Federal Government-funded projects and interventions across Osun State to scrutiny as the anti-corruption agency seeks to ensure that allocated public resources translate into actual infrastructure and services for residents.
