A young woman, Hadiza Musa Baffa, has publicly accused Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, a former Minister of Special Duties, of raping her in 2014 and using his influence to intimidate her into silence for over a decade.
In an emotional video released on August 17, 2025, and obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, Hadiza alleged that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria threatened her life and subjected her and her child to continuous harassment. She further claimed that Turaki is the father of her child.
According to her, the alleged assault took place in September 2014 while she was a student of Base University, Abuja. She narrated that Turaki sent his driver to pick her up and take her to a residence in Asokoro, Abuja, where he later gained access to her room at about 1 a.m.
“He raped me that night and asked me not to say anything. I was really scared to talk,” Hadiza recounted tearfully, adding that her trauma was evident when she returned to school the next day.
Hadiza also denied authorship of a letter circulating online about the case, insisting she had no knowledge of it. “I didn’t write any letter and I have no idea about that letter or why the person that wrote it wrote it,” she stressed.
Turaki has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as “spurious and politically motivated,” claiming they were orchestrated by adversaries to tarnish his image.
In a statement by his media aide, Lawal Umar, the ex-minister insisted the allegations lacked evidence and were fabricated as part of a smear campaign. He added that police investigations at the time found no proof, leading to the case being struck out after Hadiza allegedly withdrew her petition.
Turaki further alleged that Hadiza’s father later apologized to him in writing, while Hadiza herself sent a message expressing regret. He also challenged the authenticity of DNA results trending online, noting that a court has already restrained parties from relying on them pending a final ruling.
Despite Turaki’s denials, a recent ruling by a Magistrate Court dismissed his bid to stop a DNA test in the ongoing paternity dispute. Gender rights advocates described the decision as a breakthrough for survivors of sexual abuse in Nigeria.
A coalition of civil society groups has since rallied behind Hadiza, demanding independent oversight of the proceedings, protection for the survivor, and accountability for alleged abuse of power.
“Hadiza’s ordeal is a harrowing account of alleged sexual abuse, emotional manipulation, and systemic silencing by a former government official,” the coalition stated, noting her claims of multiple forced abortions and continued intimidation.
The group urged women’s rights organizations, bar associations, and human rights defenders to stand with Hadiza, stressing that the case “is not just personal but a national emergency.”
