The Chief Justice of Nigeria Nigeria, Honourable Justice Tanko Muhammad has expressed his readiness to support moves to reduce his powers relating to appointment of members of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

CJN is empowered by law to appoint 86 per cent members of NJC and 60 per cent of members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).

While speaking as a guest at a webinar organized by the Judicial Reform Institute on Saturday with the theme, ‘Selection and appointment of judges: Lessons for Nigeria.’, Tanko Muhammad CJN said he will give 100% support to moves aimed at reducing his powers adding that it is not all about an individual, but something about the nation

“I will accept it 100 per cent, because this is something for the nation. It is not something for one individual.

“But where the law has conferred powers on a particular individual, he has to exercise powers; there is nothing you can do.

“But certainly, if this would be amended, I give 100 per cent for the amendment.” response of CJN as to whether he will support such move

Others at the event include the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and Osaro Eghobamien (SAN) as co-moderator of the event.

The Justice Reform Institute also, during the event, called for reform in the process of the appointment of Justice on the basis that sectional and political interest has infiltrated the process.
