Dozens of lawyers and family members of the head of the Egyptian Bar Association, Ragaei Attia, mourned his death on Saturday after he passed away during a court sessions.

Attia, also the president of the Arab Lawyers Union, was pleading as the attorney of fellow lawyers at South Giza Court who were charged with insulting the judiciary when he suffered a sudden attack and passed away on the spot.

His funeral was attended by Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker, Ahmed Fathi Sorour, former Speaker of the People’s Assembly, and leaders of the Egyptian Bar Association.

Mohamed Salim al-Awa, lawyer and former presidential candidate, also participated in the funeral.

Mourners performed the funeral prayer in the Omar Makram Mosque, and his body was transferred to the family cemetery in 6th of October City. The Bar Association announced mourning for three days within the union, while the syndicates of journalists and doctors lamented the loss.

The Secretary-General of the Arab Lawyers Union Makkawi bin Issa also offered his condolences over Attia’s death.

Attia had graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1959 and worked as a lawyer to defend several important cases over six decades.

His main contributions were in public work and left behind scores of publications and books in legal, religious and literary fields.
