The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has refuted claims by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, that the union has suspended its ongoing warning strike.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with union leaders, Pate announced that the nurses had called off their industrial action following what he described as “fruitful deliberations and mutual agreements.”
However, in a swift response, NANNM’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, dismissed the minister’s statement, insisting the strike had not been suspended.
“If it was the Minister who organized the strike, then he could call it off. But he didn’t. As far as I’m concerned, the strike organized by the association is still ongoing,” Rilwan told Daily Trust in a telephone interview. “There are procedures to follow if it is to be called off at all.”
NANNM had commenced a seven-day nationwide warning strike on July 29, citing poor remuneration, acute staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions in federal health institutions. The action followed the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued to the federal government.
Healthcare delivery has been significantly disrupted across public hospitals nationwide since the strike began, compounding the sector’s crisis amid ongoing disputes with doctors and other health professionals over welfare issues.
While the Health Minister maintains that consensus was reached, union leaders have yet to issue an official statement confirming any suspension or termination of the strike.
The warning strike is scheduled to run until August 5 unless officially resolved or extended by the union’s leadership.
