Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa) has condemned recent defections by governors and political leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their actions as abandoning the mess they helped create.

Dickson made the remarks following reports that his State Governor and successor, Duoye Diri, along with other political actors in Bayelsa, had decamped to the APC.

The federal lawmaker emphasized that being in opposition does not mean rejecting all initiatives from the ruling party, noting his support for President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking to journalists after Wednesday’s Senate plenary, Dickson stated:

“I am steadfast in the PDP and working with my colleagues to ensure that problems within the party are addressed. It is very sad that some governors and leaders, instead of showing leadership, created problems they could not solve and are now bailing out. This belittles our democracy and endangers multi-party governance.”

Dickson affirmed his commitment to a plural democratic system, saying: “A multi-party Nigeria can only thrive in a plural democratic environment. I have not been a godfather; I left everything for consultation and advice. I am standing with the PDP, which has given our people the opportunity to run for elections and hold key offices in this country.”

On the nomination of Professor Amupitan, he described it as “an excellent choice” and pledged to support his confirmation in the Senate, emphasizing the nominee’s qualifications as a law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“I will work with my colleagues to ensure the electoral reforms we champion see the light of day, and that Professor Amupitan is confirmed as Chairman of INEC. He understands the place of this office in our nation’s history,” Dickson added.
