Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State hosted a special dinner at the Lagos House, Marina, to honor the newly appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The event celebrated Justice Kekere-Ekun’s achievement as the second woman to hold the position of CJN since Nigeria’s independence.

During the dinner, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, praised Justice Kekere-Ekun, describing her as a “fine lady” and a “jurist to the core.” Justice Ariwoola shared his long-standing relationship with the new CJN, revealing that they had been classmates at the Nigerian Law School over 40 years ago.

Justice Ariwoola expressed his confidence in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ability to lead the judiciary, stating, “She’s going to be one of the best heads of courts Nigerians can be proud of. I have no doubt in my mind that the shoes she stepped in will not be too big for her.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment as CJN marks a notable milestone in Nigeria’s legal history. The last Lagos indigene to hold the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria was Taslim Olawale Elias, who served from 1972 to 1975. Elias was also the first Attorney General of Nigeria in 1960.
