Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has declared a noteworthy reduction in school fees, unveiling a 50% decrease for the State university and a 30% reduction for the polytechnic and other higher institutions.

This move stands in stark contrast to the prior administration’s decision to increase school fees by 100% in government-owned higher institutions within the State, under the leadership of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During a press conference, Governor Sani articulated that this decision reflects his administration’s commitment to operating a people-centered and inclusive government that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens. He stressed that the essence of his administration’s approach is to ensure that no segment of the State is left behind.
Governor Sani expressed, “We have taken steps to provide succor to the poor, underserved, and vulnerable in Kaduna State. Our administration has therefore prioritized access to education for children and youths of Kaduna State as part of our SUSTAIN Agenda.”
In response to concerns about the current fees’ impact on school enrollment and retention, Governor Sani initiated a comprehensive review. The Heads of Tertiary Institutions, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, assessed the existing fees structure in state-owned tertiary institutions. Their findings indicated that the existing fees were burdensome and had led to a decline in student enrollments. Many students were compelled to either forgo tertiary education or seek alternatives due to the financial strain.
To address these challenges, the recommendation was to adopt a competitive fees model that aligns with current realities and promotes access to quality education. Governor Sani’s administration accepted these recommendations and consequently revised the fees downwards.
This fee reduction aligns with the administration’s commitment to mitigating the effects of the rising cost of living, particularly following the recent removal of petroleum subsidies in Nigeria. Governor Sani assured the public that the welfare of the people remains paramount and pledged the government’s dedication to free and quality education for every child, improved teacher welfare, enhanced school infrastructure, technical and vocational education investments, and fostering ICT competence among students.
