The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 of Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Bemgha Koughna, has survived an ambush by suspected Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG) members near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.

The attack occurred while the GOC’s convoy was en route to visit frontline troops deployed in the state.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the convoy came under sudden and heavy fire while moving through a volatile forested terrain.

According to him, Major General Koughna and his troops responded with superior firepower, neutralising five suspected terrorists and successfully repelling the ambush.

He noted that the swift counter-ambush operation not only secured the convoy but also disrupted the terrorists’ plans and sent a strong warning to insurgent groups operating in the area.

Following the engagement, troops conducted a sweep of the scene and recovered a cache of weapons and other items. The recovered exhibits include one OJC gun, one PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, one bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing ₦840,000, two mobile phones, and five motorcycles.

Lieutenant Colonel Osoba stated that troops have remained deployed in the general area to maintain dominance and prevent further attacks.

He added that the successful operation underscores the commitment of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army to safeguarding civilians and eliminating terrorist threats across the North West region.
