The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has approved the establishment of six new branches across various states, effective immediately. The decision, announced on November 24, 2025, follows applications endorsed by at least 50 financially up-to-date members and backed by identifiable judicial divisions, in line with the NBA Constitution.

The approvals were granted during NEC’s quarterly meeting held on November 20, 2025, in Benin, Edo State. The NBA President, after consultations with prospective branch leaders, has appointed Caretaker Committees for each of the new branches to oversee their affairs pending elections for substantive executives. The initiative forms part of a broader plan to establish nine new branches nationwide, aimed at deepening engagement and enhancing professional development for members in underserved judicial areas.

The new branches are carved out from existing ones and will cover specific judicial divisions. Elections for substantive officers are scheduled to hold during the branches’ Annual General Meetings (AGMs) in June 2026. Election notices are expected to be published by March 31, 2026, and forwarded to the NBA General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara. Caretaker Committee members intending to contest must resign by March 31, 2026, to ensure transparency.

The Caretaker Committees are mandated to:

  1. Assume immediate leadership, safeguard assets, and organize monthly general meetings.
  2. Manage branch affairs in line with the NBA Constitution and NEC directives.
  3. Establish administrative structures consistent with the Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches.
  4. Maintain accurate records on membership, finances, and regular reports to the National Secretariat.
  5. Coordinate branch activities, continuing professional development programmes, and member welfare.
  6. Organize transparent and credible elections under NBA supervision.
  7. Perform any other duties assigned by the President or NEC.

Members have been encouraged to work closely with the committees to ensure the smooth takeoff of the new branches. Below is a comprehensive list of the branches and their Caretaker Committees:
