The Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation (JASAN Foundation) recently held its inaugural edition of “The Legacy Dialogue” in Abuja, focusing on the future of law and professional identity formation through strategic sponsorship and mentorship.
The event, which took place on September 13, 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, brought together prominent legal professionals, academics, and stakeholders to discuss critical issues facing the legal profession.
Key speakers included Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN, Founder and President of JASAN Foundation, and Prof. Ernest Ojukwu, SAN, who delivered the keynote address. The panel discussion featured distinguished guests such as Hon. Justice Mabel T. Segun-Bello, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, and Mr. Ayotunde F. Ogunleye, SAN, moderated by Mr. Oyetola M. Atoyebi, SAN.
The dialogue highlighted the rapid evolution within the legal profession due to technological advancements, globalization, and changing client needs. Participants noted a significant lack of structured mentorship in the legal profession and praised JASAN Foundation for its initiative to provide an institutional platform for trans-generational mentorship.
Key recommendations from the event included:
1. Establishing structured mentorship and sponsorship programs across the legal industry.
2. Advocating for legal reforms to address the lack of systematic pupillage and mentorship.
3. Leveraging modern technologies for dynamic engagement between sponsors, mentors, and mentees.
4. Promoting diversity and inclusion in mentorship programs.
5. Emphasizing continuous legal education for young lawyers.
The JASAN Foundation committed to building a sustainable legal ecosystem to promote mentorship, sponsorship, and legal reforms. The organization called on senior lawyers, established law firms, and the Nigerian Bar Association to collaborate on these initiatives to ensure the holistic development of young lawyers and drive positive change in the legal profession.
