The long arm of the law has caught up with Ikemefuna Ossai, one of the two fugitives linked to the brutal murder of Justice Chukwunenye Azuka, a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, who was abducted and later found dead in early 2024.

Ossai, who had escaped from police custody earlier this year, was rearrested on Wednesday evening in Asaba, the Delta State capital, following a coordinated operation involving operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and private security firm Eagle Tracker Global Network Limited.

Justice Azuka, 40, represented Onitsha North 1 State Constituency in the Anambra State Assembly. He was kidnapped on December 24, 2023, and remained missing until February 6, 2024, when his lifeless body was discovered beneath the Second Niger Bridge, sending shockwaves across the region.

The following day, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, announced the arrest of nine suspects in connection with the crime.

However, on February 21, police disclosed that two of the suspects had escaped, triggering public concern and a renewed effort to recapture them.

The successful apprehension of Ossai was the result of an intensive transnational manhunt spanning Nigeria and Ghana, led by security firm Eagle Tracker in collaboration with officers from the police Rapid Response Squad (RRS), commanded by CSP Ifeanyi Iburu.

A director at Eagle Tracker, who spoke under anonymity, revealed that the suspect fled to Accra and Kumasi in Ghana following his escape.

“We discovered that he ran to Ghana, where he committed another crime involving the theft of an iPhone Pro Max. Some of his gang members were killed, but he escaped,” the source said.

Ossai was said to have adopted a pattern of cross-border criminality, alternating between Nigeria and Ghana to evade authorities.

The security team continued profiling his movements and, by April 15, confirmed his return to Nigeria. After further surveillance, they tracked him to Cable Point along Denis Osadebe Road in Asaba, where he was finally arrested at 7:40 pm on May 7.

“This is a major breakthrough,” the Eagle Tracker director said. “We will not rest until Justice Azuka gets the justice he deserves. This is a commitment we made and one we will see through.”

The security firm, which has operated for 19 years, emphasized its resolve to partner with law enforcement to strengthen Nigeria’s fragile security architecture.

The Anambra State Police Command is yet to issue a formal statement on the rearrest as of press time.

With Ossai now back in custody, investigators are expected to intensify efforts to unravel the full network behind Justice Azuka’s murder, while the search for the second fugitive continues.
