Diezani Alison-Madueke, Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, appeared at the Westminster Magistrates Court in the UK on Monday over an alleged £100,000 bribery offence.

The district judge, Michael Snow, granted Mrs Alison-Madueke bail for £70,000 and imposed other conditions including a curfew, electronic tag and surety. Her next court date is set for October 30 at Southwark Crown Court.

According to sources, the former minister was charged alongside her brother and a Nigerian oil businessman. Her lawyer indicated she will plead not guilty when formally arraigned.

In August, UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) alleged Mrs Alison-Madueke received illicit benefits for awarding lucrative oil contracts while in office between 2010-2015.

The NCA said its probe was a complex international investigation. Earlier in March, it provided evidence enabling U.S. authorities recover $53.1 million linked to the ex-minister’s alleged graft.

Mrs Alison-Madueke and four others were first arrested in the UK over money laundering and bribery in 2015 but granted bail.

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused her of stealing $2.5 billion as oil minister – charges she has denied.

Her court appearance on Monday signals she will now face trial in the UK over longstanding bribery allegations during her tenure managing Nigeria’s oil resources.
