The former Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ogbonnia Oko Enyim, has raised alarm over an alleged assassination attempt on his life by purported members of Ebubeagu, Afikpo South Chapter, under the directives of the Ebonyi state governor, David Umahi.

This was disclosed in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, dated 24th May, 2021, with the title: “A CASE OF THREAT TO LIFE, ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION, WILFUL DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTIES, CRIMINAL INTIMIDATION AND HARASSMENT OF POLITICAL OPPONENTS USING EBUBEAGU, AGAINST DAVID UMAHI THE GOVERNOR OF EBONYI STATE AND STANLEY OKORO EMEGHA, COMMISSIONER FOR INTERNAL SECURITY, EBONYI STATE: URGENT NEED FOR THE INTERVENTION OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE” and sighted by TheNigerialawyer(TNL).
The Petitioner, in his petition, narrated how he narrowly escaped assassination when heavily armed men, allegedly identified as members of Ebubeagu, Afikpo South Chapter, stormed his home in Afikpo North Local Government of Ebonyi State, on Friday 21st May, at about 1:pm, but unfortunately met his children. Ogbonnia Oko Enyim, also stated that when they could not find him they shot severally into the air to scare nearby neighbours who upon seeing the wilful destruction of his properties by the armed men, attempted to rush into his compound to find out what was happening.
He went on to state that for over forty-five minutes, the alleged armed assassins, identified as members of EBUBEAGU, used by David Umahi, through the Commissioner of Homeland Security Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro Emegha, turned his house upside down, destroying most of his properties including documents and carted away with over Two Million Naira, (N2,000,000) cash in his bedroom.
Recall that Enyim had earlier submitted a petition to EFCC against David Umahi, asking the Commission to investigate David Umahi, for over 20 Billion Naira, he claimed Umahi, stole from the 13 Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State. In the said petition, Enyim, detailed how the governor had allegedly collected 20 Million Naira, forcefully, every month, from all the 13 Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State.
Enyim, further added that it was based on the revelation through his petition to EFCC, that David Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State, engaged the Ebubeagu, outfit in Ebonyi State to eliminate his person.
The petition partly reads:
“That David Umahi, had in a press conference in Abakiliki, attended by the AIG of the Zone, and the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State, warned the police, never to arrest any of his officers or commissioners without first getting his approval.
“That the said Commissioner for Homeland Security, Ebonyi State, emboldened by this stern warning to the police, by the governor of Ebonyi State, has fully deployed the heavily armed EBUBEAGU, to assassinate, intimidate and humiliate every political opponent in the state, including his person.”
The petition from his lawyers further reads
“We humbly appeal to the esteemed office, to quickly intervene by investigating the use of the heavily armed EBUBEAGU in Ebonyi State, by Governor David Umahi, to threaten and intimidate political opponents who have refused to join him to All Progressive Congress (APC). It is further our client’s instructions that the said David Umahi, is now massively recruiting able-bodied young men from Ebonyi State and within, into the EBUBEAGU outfit, preparatory to 2023 elections. The said David Umahi had publicly vowed to deal with every political opposition in Ebonyi State, using EBUBEBAGU.
“It is further our client’s instructions that except the threats issued by the governor of Ebonyi State, are investigated as a matter of urgency, that other political opponents in Ebonyi State, may resort to self-defense, if nothing is done as a matter of urgency.
“Our client, therefore, appeals to your esteemed office to intervene as a matter of grave urgency, to avert a possible breakdown of law and order in Ebonyi State, and save his life and that of other political opponents in Ebonyi State, from imminent danger of assassination, by David Umahi”.
