President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday forwarded the names of 32 ambassadorial nominees, consisting of 15 career and 17 non-career ambassadors, to the Senate for confirmation.

The development comes just a few days after the president submitted the first batch of three nominees.

In two separate letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nominees without delay.

This was disclosed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, four women are on the career ambassadors’ list, while six women feature on the non-career list.

An ambassador is an official representative of a country appointed to live in another nation or at an international organisation to manage diplomatic relations. Ambassadors serve as the primary liaison between their home government and the host country, and may be either career or non-career appointees.

As reactions continue to trail the nominations, Tribune Online highlights five key distinctions between the two categories.

Appointment process
Career ambassadors typically rise through the Foreign Service based on merit, seniority and professional progression. Non-career ambassadors are politically appointed by the president and may come from any professional background.

Professional training
Career ambassadors undergo formal diplomatic training and continuous professional development. Non-career ambassadors may not have specialised diplomatic training.

Years of service
Career ambassadors usually have decades of experience in diplomacy, international relations and foreign postings. Non-career ambassadors may have no prior diplomatic service or foreign assignments.

Job security
Career ambassadors have long-term careers within the Foreign Service structure. Non-career ambassadors usually serve only for the duration of the administration that appointed them.

Diplomatic expertise
Career ambassadors possess technical expertise in negotiation, protocol and foreign policy. Non-career ambassadors rely more on their professional background, public service experience or political roles.

Key phrase: Non-career ambassadors
