Fire on Monday gutted a section of the chambers of a Justice of the Supreme Court, Mohammed Saulawa.

The blaze started around 6am and was contained using fire extinguishers, according to court spokesperson Festus Akande.

No casualties were reported, despite some “fake news” circulating online to the contrary, Akande noted. The fire affected three offices, including that of Justice Mohammed Saulawa.

Cleaners and early arriving staff detected the flames and raised the alarm. They were able to combat the fire using extinguishers within the building.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault in one of the justices’ chambers, a court source revealed, but this remains unconfirmed. It is uncertain if sensitive case files were impacted.

Details of the fire incident are still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

But our correspondent gathered that staff members of the court tried to save some documents from the fire before the arrival of the fire services.

“The fire services responded swiftly. I think they came from Asokoro. If not for their timely intervention, the situation would have been worse. The fire could have extended to other adjoining chambers and other parts of the complex. But the fire service came in quickly to join the court’s fire department, and immediately helped to put out the fire,” a court official who is not permitted to speak to the press on the matter told our correspondent.

The incident comes ahead of a crucial case at the Supreme Court regarding the disputed February 25 presidential election won by APC’s Bola Tinubu. The opposition PDP and LP have appealed to nullify Tinubu’s victory.

While the extent of damage remains unclear, the timing has raised some suspicions as Nigeria awaits the court’s ruling on the contentious poll. However, no evidence indicates the fire was intentionally set. Investigations are likely ongoing into the cause.
